Focused Scribe is a local-first writing application designed to allow anyone to write without distraction.

Your privacy is critically important to us. At Focused Scribe, we have a fundamental principle: We are thoughtful about the personal information we ask you to provide and the personal information that we collect about you through the operation of our services.

LEGAL NOTICE & PRIVACY POLICY: 100% LOCAL

Focused Scribe is a local-first application. We do not collect, store, or transmit any of your personal data, writings, or settings.

• Your Data, Your Problem: All your manuscripts, settings, notes, and stats are saved exclusively in your browser's local storage or IndexedDB. Because all data is strictly local, you are entirely responsible for backing up your work using the Export menu. If you clear your browser data or lose your device, your data is gone forever. We have no external servers and cannot recover lost data for you.
• No Tracking: We do not use tracking pixels, analytics, or third-party ads.
• "As Is" Software: This software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. We are not liable for any data loss, bugs, or interruptions.

Tracks your total word count for the current session. Updates in real-time as you type.

Set a daily or session target word count. The counter will visually indicate progress towards your goal.

Sprint: Set a timer (top bar) and write continuously. We track your "Best WPM" (Words Per Minute) record locally.

Goals: Set a session word count target. The counter turns green and notifies you when reached.

New Story: Click "NEW" in the Manuscript tab. Enter a title.

Switching: Use the dropdown menu to switch between multiple active drafts.

Renaming: Click "RENAME" to change the current story's title.

Deleting: Click "DEL" to permanently remove a story (requires confirmation).

Note: The default "autosave" story cannot be renamed or deleted.

Customization: Adjust colors, fonts, and CRT effects in the Environment tab.

Saving: Click the (+) button next to the preset dropdown to save your current look as a new Custom Theme.

Deleting: Select a custom theme and click the (-) button to remove it. Default themes cannot be deleted.

Single Story: Export your current manuscript as MD, TXT, OPENDOC/WORD, PDF, or EPUB.

Export Project: Generates a single text file containing your current manuscript alongside its associated chapters, world notes, and scratchpad.

Full Data Backup: Use "EXPORT DATA" to generate a complete `.json` backup of ALL stories, notes, scores, settings, and daily trackers. "IMPORT DATA" restores them.

Vim (ALT): Enables Vim movement. (Hold ALT + H/J/K/L for Left/Down/Up/Right | W/B for Next/Previous Word | 0/$ for Line Start/End | G for Bottom | U for Undo).

Linter: Style analysis tool.

Highlights style issues to improve prose. Configure active checks in settings.

• Adverbs: Targets -ly words to encourage stronger verbs.
• Passive Voice: Targets "was/is + verb" to encourage active engagement.
• Filter Words: (saw, felt, heard) Removes "filtering" for tighter immersion.
• Weasel Words: (very, really, quite) Removes weak filler phrases.
• Cliches: Flags overused idiom phrases.
• Echoes: Spots repetitive words clustered too close together.

Readability statistics to gauge document pacing and complexity.

• Flesch-Kincaid: Evaluates reading level. High scores = conversational/easy reading. Low scores = academic/dense reading.
• Dialogue %: Measures balance by checking proportion of spoken dialogue quotes against narration.
• Sentences & Est Time: Simple counts including an approximate minute-calculation for reading length.

Visual graph of sentence lengths. Use it to ensure variety in your prose flow.

Customize the app aesthetics, fonts, and colors.

Translate the UI. Note: Linter support for non-English languages is still work-in-progress.

Adjust CRT effects, colors, fonts, and layout options like Mobile Zoom and Steamdeck Mode.

The "LINTER" (in Workstation tab) analyzes your text for common style issues. Toggle specific checks to highlight them in your text.

• Adverbs: Targets -ly words. Why? Encourage stronger verbs.
